Utah Phillips – Oct. 16, 1976

Utah PhillipsHard to know what to say about Utah Phillips. A fantastic performer (no one could “pun” like him), who also wrote some great songs, including the bluegrass standard “Rock, Salt, and Nails”. It was a real treat to host him at the coffee house. He left us in 2008, but here’s a dose of Utah live and in person.

Tom Mitchell – Oct. 1, 1976

Tom Mitchell was a musician living in Saratoga when he played the Coffee House. A great singer and song-writer, he now lives in Nashville. Tonight’s performance featured Tom Mitchell (vocals and guitar), Tony Markellis (bass), Pete Smith (pedal steel). Tom also gave me the nickname “Roger Cornbread”.

Banjo Dan and the Midnight Plowboys – Dec. 6, 1975

Banjo Dan and the Midnight PlowboysOne of my favorite bluegrass bands, Banjo Dan hails from northern VT. The band is comprised of Banjo Dan Lindner, Willy Lindner (mandolin), Big Al Davis (guitar),  Pete Tourin (fiddle), Sam B (bass). They became regulars at the Coffee House. Please note that some of the selections performed by the Plowboys are included in their 2-disc compilation of live recordings, “Caught In The Act,” available at www.banjodan.com.

Central Park Sheiks -1975

A great Western Swing group from New York City. The group was comprised of Bob Hipkens (dobro, trumpet), Rich Lieberson (guitar), and Bert Lee (guitar). Matt Glaser (fiddle) later joined the group. But these recordings (March 9, 1975) predate him. Thanks to Bill Spence for these.
